Some early chassis assemblies do not have
serial numbers but most have a stamped 3 or 4 digit number that
probably corresponds to the sequence of manufacture. Many of
these sets were returned to the factory for refurbishment after
the prolonged inactivity during the war and I think some swapping
of chassis assemblies took place resulting in some newer sets
being fitted with assemblies reworked from older sets. (You may
also see 5 digit silk screened numbers. These are simply part
numbers.)
The 702, 703 and 901 share the same Timebase chassis and the number location is highlighted in red
below.
Whilst the 701, 705, 900 and 902 have essentially the same schematic they use a
rectangular chassis and the number is also near to the connector
tags.
The Sound chassis number is normally located at the RF end
but earlier units may have it near the RF input cable entry and
may be concealed by the screening metalwork.
The Radio chassis number is located next to V3
(VMP4G)
The TRF chassis number is located near to the output
connectors.
The 901/702/703 Power Supply number is located in
front of the HT smoothing capacitors
The 900/902/705/701 is located to the right of the connector
panel
The earliest sets have the additional circuitry for the
triode V8 that maintained line synch during BTL frame pulses. Almost all sets
originally fitted with the standards switch had it removed when the sets were
refurbished after the war. It would appear that chassis that had been built
prior to the standards decision date but shipped after it have a blanking plate
fitted on the top side. Chassis built without the V8 circuitry have the blanking
plate mounted on the under side.
